Civic engagement manager
Job Status: Full-time
Location: Remote work from home environment, Kansas-based, preferably Wichita or NE Kansas
Work Schedule: Typical daytime office hours with some evening/weekends required
Reports to: Deputy Director
Travel: Regular statewide travel and occasional national travel for conferences, meetings and presentations
Positions Supervised: Will supervise volunteers, may supervise staff and interns as time and work allows
Position Summary: The Civic Engagement Manager will lead Kansas Appleseed’s civic engagement campaign to build grassroots power and drive community-centered advocacy efforts. This includes managing get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts, educating and mobilizing communities around policy issues, and leading opposition to efforts that threaten equity and justice in Kansas.

Civic Engagement & Voter Mobilization
- Develop deep understanding and expertise on civic engagement and creating healthier communities
- Develop and execute voter registration, education, and GOTV strategies, especially among historically disenfranchised communities.
- Lead nonpartisan voter engagement campaigns across key Kansas communities.
- Connect and engage with individuals, schools, government agencies, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, statewide coalitions and others to create a sustainable statewide network of supporters to advocate for healthier communities.
Grassroots Advocacy
- Coordinate Kansas Appleseed’s grassroots strategies on changes to election laws, voter suppression efforts, and ballot initiatives.
- Support the development of year-round grassroots leadership and advocacy capacity in Kansas communities.
- Facilitate community meetings, listening sessions, trainings, and public education events.
- Engage directly with impacted individuals to build local leadership.
- Create campaign materials, messaging guides, and advocacy toolkits.
- Coordinate digital advocacy and outreach for Kansas Appleseed’s policy initiatives.
Reporting & Evaluation
- Provide research, writing, and other support for Kansas Appleseed’s advocacy agenda as needed.
- Contribute to other outward-facing communications, including developing social media content, op-eds, articles, in-person presentations, etc.
- Participate in quarterly internal evaluation meetings to discuss progress to date, successes, lessons learned, priorities going forward.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Highly organized and reliable; able to work independently, think strategically, and achieve outcomes.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to engage with individuals from all backgrounds.
- Adept professional judgement and ability to be diplomatic in sometimes contentious settings.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: community organizing, grassroots mobilizing, nonprofit policy advocacy, voter engagement, coalition development and management.
- Experience recruiting and managing volunteers.
- Bachelor’s degree.
Candidates must be available for evening and weekend commitments. Candidates will need a personal vehicle, valid driver’s license, and insurance as the position requires frequent in-state travel. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
Pay and Benefits: $65,000 per year. Employer-paid medical, vision, and dental insurance, short- and long-term disability, life insurance, 3% match to organization-sponsored IRA, vacation (three weeks), health leave (two weeks), 17 paid holidays, work from home and cell phone stipends.
