SNAP in Kansas: A Legacy Under Attack

Today, Kansas Appleseed is releasing our newest report, SNAP in Kansas: A Legacy Under Attack, on the 10th anniversary of Governor Brownback signing the HOPE Act into law. In the decade since, Kansans facing food insecurity have felt the weight of its harmful policies. Senator Bob Dole worked his whole career to fight hunger in the US and worldwide. But today, Kansas has one of the lowest SNAP participation rates in the nation. These policies contradict the original goals of the Food Assistance Program that Senator Bob Dole advocated.

This report highlights the proud anti-hunger legacy of Kansas, debunks damaging myths about SNAP food assistance, and lays out the clear economic and health benefits of SNAP when it can work at its best. Unfortunately, Kansas lawmakers have eroded the long Kansan legacy of helping our neighbors when they need it most. In this report, we outline a vision for a Kansas that feeds every family because no one should go hungry in this state.
