FREE EVENT: Keeping Kansas Courts Fair and Free

July 2, 2025

Justice for All: Keeping Kansas Courts Fair and Free

The Kansas Supreme Court has long been protected from partisan influence through a nationally respected merit-based selection system for Supreme Court justices. But that system is now under threat.

In 2026, Kansas voters will be asked to decide on a proposed constitutional amendment that would dismantle our current system and call for the election of justices, opening the door to political interference in our courts and eroding public trust in the judiciary. Join us for a vital and timely conversation about what’s at stake.

Date: August 6 from 5:30-7:30 (with program from 6:00-7:00ish)
Location: Lied Center
Moderator: Sherman Smith, Kansas Reflector

Featuring:
  • Carol Beier, retired Kansas Supreme Court Justice
  • Teresa Woody, legal director, Kansas Appleseed
  • Mark Tallman, education and policy expert, Kansas Association of School Boards

Together, they will explain the history and value of Kansas’s judicial selection process, the real implications of SCR 1611, and how we can protect the fairness and independence of our courts as we approach the 2026 vote. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
