Statement from Kansas Appleseed on SB 4 Override

March 26, 2025

STATEMENT FROM KANSAS APPLESEED ON PASSAGE OF SCR 1611:

We are disappointed to see the Legislature’s commitment to eliminating the mail-in ballot grace period by overriding Gov. Kelly’s veto of SB 4. The reality in Kansas is that our elections are safe, secure, and controlled by Republicans. Instead of continuing to limit the ability of Kansans to have their voices heard at the ballot box, our Legislature should be working together to enact policies that result in more Kansans voting.

SB 4 does not enhance election integrity; instead, it jeopardizes the votes of Kansans in rural areas, those with mobility issues or disabilities, and anyone who is away on Election Day. Kansans no longer have control over whether their ballots are cast, as they now depend entirely on the postal service. Regardless of how early they mail in their ballots, their ability to ensure their vote is counted is beyond their control.
