Communications Manager

The Communications Manager will work with the Kansas Appleseed team to advance policies and programs to create more just, inclusive and thriving Kansas communities. The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to manage many different tasks quickly and efficiently, while exhibiting excellent communication skills both internally and externally.

A bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent and two years work or intensive volunteer experience in position with related duties.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in the Lawrence office or at-home office during typical daytime office hours with some evenings/weekends required. Some travel required for events and meetings. Employee must be based in Kansas.
Compensation
$51,000-$54,000 annually, plus benefits (premium health and dental plan fully paid by the employer; retirement employer match up to 3% of salary; PTO (3 weeks), health leave (2 weeks), and 18 paid holidays, cell phone stipend, work from home stipend).

The Communications Manager will work with the Kansas Appleseed team to advance policies and programs to create more just, inclusive and thriving Kansas communities. Primary Responsibilities
- Develop statewide communications strategy to expand Kansas Appleseed's reach, incorporating both traditional and innovative outreach tactics.
- Manage and expand relationships with media to position Kansas Appleseed as an organization that can provide an expert opinion on areas related to the organization’s work. Ensure increased and accurate coverage of Kansas Appleseed’s work.
- Coordinate all aspects of Kansas Appleseed's communications plans, including fielding media requests, pitching stories, updating the website, managing social media channels, curating content for increased digital engagement, writing press releases, booking speaking engagements, and providing support on the development of op-eds and other appropriate materials.
- Ensure all public-facing materials align with the communications plan and brand identity overseeing the editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of external communications, including legislative agenda, fundraising appeals and donor communications. Coordinate efforts with graphic designers, as needed.
- Develop and maintain relationships with state and national partners and coordinate Kansas-based media strategy. In collaboration with members of the leadership team, develop an events calendar and execute primarily small scale events throughout Kansas.
- Manage the CRM database to assist the organization in developing outreach strategies that will further promote the work of Kansas Appleseed.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated commitment to Kansas Appleseed’s mission, vision, and approach to advocacy
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication
- Highly organized and reliable with ability to prioritize and manage time effectively and complete projects with minimal supervision
- Proficiency with email, office products, and the ability to learn CRM database
- Ability to research and understand diverse audiences and marketing trends
- Experience planning and executing events
- Ability to prioritize conflicting needs, often with deadline pressures
- Valid automobile driver’s license
