Kansas Appleseed is hiring a Just Campaign Director.

  • Plan and execute the work of the Just campaign to ensure it aligns with the campaign’s goals and objectives, including:
    • staying apprised of issues and trends in adult justice, youth justice, and child welfare and making recommendations on Kansas Appleseed’s potential involvement in new and emerging areas;
    • representing Kansas Appleseed on local, state and national coalitions and coordinating research, advocacy, and outreach efforts;
    • developing and implementing strategies to engage elected officials and policymakers to create, support, and advance legislation that aligns with the organization’s strategic goals; and,
    • serving as a trusted expert to media outlets on youth justice, adult justice, and child welfare issues.
  • Work with the deputy director and policy and legal research analyst to develop and coordinate  the campaign research and advocacy strategies. 
  • Work with the litigation director to identify and pursue impact litigation in the campaign areas.
  • Collaborate with civic engagement manager to incorporate civic and voter engagement opportunities within campaign priorities. 
  • Coordinate a communications strategy in collaboration with the Communications Manager to leverage traditional and new media to advance policy changes.
  • In collaboration with the executive director and deputy director, identify grant opportunities, strengthen relationships with foundations, and identify new funding priorities. Ensure that objectives and timelines are met for all grants.

Qualifications: 

  • Highly organized and reliable; able to work collaboratively, think strategically, and achieve outcomes.
  • A history of working collaboratively and successfully with people and organizations from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds and a broad range of ideological positions and religious views.
  • Knowledge of current political alignments and opportunities for collaboration in Kansas with a broad range of groups.
  • Exceptional professional judgment and ability to be diplomatic in sometimes contentious settings.
  • If an attorney, must be licensed to practice law in Kansas or willingness to become licensed in Kansas. 

Education: J.D strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree required.

Experience: Minimum of  three years  experience in community organizing, grassroots mobilization, social justice advocacy, coalition development and management, research and writing, and/or impact litigations.  Minimum of one year supervising full time staff.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with email, Google Docs, social media platforms, Office software required.  

Candidates must be available for some evening and weekend commitments. Candidates will need a personal vehicle, valid driver’s license, and insurance as the position requires frequent in-state travel. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.

​​Compensation: $70,000-$75,000 annually, plus benefits: premium health and dental plan fully paid by employer, retirement employer match up to 3% of salary, PTO (3 weeks), health leave (2 weeks), and paid holidays.
