Kansas Appleseed featured on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
It’s been an exciting week at Kansas Appleseed, and I am thrilled to tell you why!
On Sunday night, Kansas Appleseed’s report, “One Year After the End of Universal Meals: Kansas Schools and Families Feel the Burden of Meal Debt,” was featured on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Watch the segment here!
John Oliver’s segment shared the history of the national lunch program, the battles of nutritional standards (is ketchup a vegetable?), and how our country came together to provide universal free meals during the pandemic. Most importantly, though, John Oliver shared his resounding support for universal free meals and encouraged every person watching to continue ringing this bell.
We are so grateful to have worked with John Oliver’s team over the past six months on this project. They were curious about what hunger looks like in Kansas communities and expressed their appreciation for our in-depth report, which was one of the first in the nation to highlight the impact of ending universal free meals following the pandemic.
Every day, Kansas Appleseed’s focus is on making policies better for every Kansan. The national attention that our report has received means we are also having an impact on hunger policies across the country. That is incredibly humbling for all of us.
We hope you watch the video to learn more about the issue – and when you’re done, I hope you’ll consider a gift to Kansas Appleseed to keep this work going.
With appreciation,
Jami
