In Kansas, the average daily Summer Food Service Program participation is much lower in July than in June, but the need for the program is just as high.  That's why Kansas Appleseed has partnered with the Kansas State Department of Education to sponsor Lunch Across Kansas Month, which encourages program sponsors to host events and activities to raise awareness and increase participation and serve 500,000 meals in July 2018! Additionally, the enriching activities sites offer can help prevent the summer educational slide, so kids are ready to learn when they return to school!

How to participate in Lunch Across Kansas Month:

Sponsors and site coordinators
If your program is still serving meals this July, you can drive participation through:
Extra outreach and marketing:
  • Boosted social media posts about the program
  • Email blast to partners and community members you're connected with
  • Place flyers in places people will see them. (You can even ask store managers if you can put them by the mirrors or stalls in bathrooms!)
  • Share information on community marquees or signs
OR hosting a special event featuring activities or special programming

Partner organizations
Help your local Summer Food Service Programs by assisting with their outreach efforts or volunteering to provide enrichment programming at the sites. This will help generate program excitement. If you'd like to get in contact with your local SFSP sponsor or site coordinator, let me know (costmeyer@kansasappleseed.org), and I'll put you in contact.

Community members
The best way you can help Kansas serve 500,000 is simply attending a site with your family or friends! All youth 18 and under eat free at SFSP sites, so just pop over with your kids, grandkids, or family friends. To find a site near you, click here.
